Helping Out

I'm shamelessly copying SweetTea and using my blog to encourage everyone in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area to make a trip over to a Maple View Farm Country Store on Monday, September 5. If you're not already familiar with this dairy farm, they make some of the most amazing ice cream in the area. On Labor Day, each of the three locations will be open and ALL proceeds will go to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief.

One of my girls wanted to do something to help so that she could give money to the Red Cross as well. So, my fourth grade class is hosting a bake sale next Wednesday, September 7 at 2:30 pm. Anyone is welcome to drop by the school and make a purchase. I have it on good authority that there will be some good eats! If you'd like to send in baked goods for the sale or simply give a donation, just email me.

I spent most of my planning period watching news video and reading articles on this latest disaster. After wiping the tears away so I could pick up my kids from P.E., I started to wonder what else I could do. I heard today that as folks are being moved from the Superdome to the Astrodome in Houston, TX, it's estimated that over 300 school aged kids will be attending school in Houston until at least December. Can you imagine? These kids will be in a strange place without the familiar trappings of home and then placed in a brand new school environment. And with no school supplies or clothes or anything, only what they carried out of New Orleans. I'm scoping out making a connection with some local schools so that maybe we can organize some sort of school supplies drive. I'll keep you posted on how y'all can help.

P.S. If you read this and you're one of those teachers in the Houston area, please email me as to how my school can help!

  2. Watching the storm coverage has almost been too much for it. Every time I turn the tv on my tears well up.
