Clearly, I need to be cleared to substitute. STAT.

Back in the fall of 2000-something, I visited Anna and her roommates in their darling little home in Washington, DC. While there I got the crazy notion that it would be a good idea to use one of those L'Oreal Couleur Experte kits to give myself a rich chocolate brown color speckled with golden highlights.

I ended up with orange stripes and Anna and I made a last minute trip to the drugstore for a box of Nice 'n Easy to restore my distressed tresses.

So last night, as I stood in the aisle of Walgreens holding this:

you would think that I would remember that charming little incident. But nooooo, I purchased the kit and headed home to make my hair a light golden copper brown.

Pre coloring excitement (just keepin' it real)

Now truly, the all-over color always comes out gorgeous. If I only I would learn to stop there...

Post highlighting results? Yup, orange stripes.

Annnnnnd in the garish light of the morning...

Once again, I made the emergency trip to CVS for the now familiar box of basic hair color. Thankfully, it brought me back to this:

Actually, my hair is now a shade of reddish brown that I would have liked to begin with. Yup, that's me, taking the long way. Every dang time.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this home hair coloring nightmare. C'mon ladies, fess up. Trust me, there's freedom in the sharing.

  1. I LOVE it! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I love that its complete with pictures. I saw a picture of my "at home dye job" done months ago and finally called my girl for her skills to make this mess better!

  2. I love your ending hair color! I'd like that myself. :) Actually, it looks like you have expensive highlighting in it now. Good job... however you got there. :)

  3. I used to color my own hair...and thought that I did a really good job at it. Back then my hair was pretty long and didn't require frequent cuts.

Well it was time for a trim, so in I went. I had colored the week before so imagine my surprise when my girl asked me if I'd intentionally left a huge portion of my head un-colored.

After that I made the best decision of my life and invest every 8-12 weeks in having AnnMarie use 4 different colors into my hair to make it into a color I love with what appears to be completely natural high and low lights.

  4. Oh, Leslie Ruth! You just about made me spit tea out my nose. Seriously. I even made Byron come look at the photos!

No color disasters to share, but I did decide to get a perm my junior year in college. BAD IDEA. I hated it. So the next weekend I went and bought another perm kit and straightened my hair. My mother, who had paid the $60 for the perm just about killed me. I haven't had a perm since.

LOVE the color you ended up with. I once decided that I should be a redhead and looked like strawberry shortcake. My oldest a couple months ago came floating down the stairs from the bathroom with strawberry shortcake hair too. Now I've fixed hers to look somewhat like your color.
