We all need a little Broadway in our Saturday

In eighth grade, my English & Math teacher, Mrs. Josie Tedford, introduced me to the magic that is the Broadway musical “Les Miserables”. She loaned me her cassette tape recording of the soundtrack and it was all I listened to for the next two weeks. I memorized every word and my dramatic little adolescent self {still wearing coke bottle glasses and braces} immediately related to the lonely Eponine and her heart’s cry, “On My Own”….

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known!

I love him
But only on my own.

I may or may not have had an unrequited love that year. Teen angst, table for one?

Imagine my sheer joy this morning when I opened my Google reader to find this little gem from the AshvilleSloan blog {Matt, Leslie and their kids are on assignment with Young Life up at Crooked Creek and Matt is doing program for the month}…

I wept with delight. And those guys in the aprons and yellow gloves? Those are high school kids that volunteered a month of their time to serve other kids at this camp by washing dishes {aka The Pits Crew}. That’s commitment, my friends. That’s just smart programming right there. Spreading the love of Jesus one Broadway number at a time…

{If you want to see another classic program number from Matt & his cohort, you should go here}

  1. I have three things that must be said:

1.) I cannot read those lyrics like a normal person...they MUST be sung

2.) That performance had me shedding joyful tears

3.) Thank You for brightening my saturday morning with this!

  3. That? Is awesome.

I had a similar experience w/ Les Miz in HS. To the extent that when my French class needed to pick something to do for Foreign Language Day, I headed up tracking down the FRENCH VERSION on cd, and we did several numbers. Hilarious.

  4. Can I admit something embarrassing? It's just between you and me, right?

    Right.

    I've never seen Les Miserables.

    I know. I'm sorry. I want to. But I haven't.

However...and I'm pretty sure this is not going to redeem me...ever since the episode of Dawson's Creek where Joey sang On My Own, I have been in love with that song. I even tracked down sheet music so I could learn all the words and accompany myself.

And yet...I still haven't seen Les Mis. WHAT is my deal??
